Prior to 1943, it was typical for allied vehicles deployed overseas to display a plain white star for identification. However, amidst the chaos and dust of battle, this "US star" sometimes risked being misinterpreted as a German Cross, particularly at distances exceeding 1000 yards. To mitigate this confusion, a circle was incorporated around the star, ensuring clearer distinction and enhancing identification accuracy.
